| Turkey's chief EU negotiator said on Monday that Turkish Cypriots would continue to work for a solution in the island regardless of the results of the presidential elections to be held in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) in April. In his reply to a question motion submitted to the Turkish parliament, Turkish State Minister & Chief Negotiator for EU Talks Egemen Bagis said that Turkish government's policy did not envisage any intervention by Turkey in the elections held in TRNC. Bagis said Turkey and TRNC always supported peace and solution in Cyprus, adding that the world also started to see the rightfulness of these countries. Expressing the importance Turkey attaches to the continuation of such process, Bagis said his country would carry on with its efforts to hold talks, to reach a common understanding and to provide a rational and permanent solution. Bagis also said that, despite all the efforts to associate the ongoing process in Cyprus with Turkey's EU bid, Turkey continued to express in every platform that the address for the solution of the Cyprus issue was Lefkosa, not Brussels. Noting that the EU acted responsible and far-sighted on such matter, Bagis said Turkey expected the union to display such a stance in 2010 as well. Bagis also said that Turkey, which was a guarantor state in Cyprus issue, would continue to fulfill its responsibilities on such matter and support a fair and permanent solution in the island. |
