| Turkey has transferred five new inmates to the prison island where Abdullah Öcalan, the leader of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, has been held for years in isolation, The Associated Press reported on Tuesday. The Council of Europe’s human rights organization had demanded that Turkey end Ocalan's solitude, saying his mental state was deteriorating after spending years as the sole inmate of Imralý island, off the coast of Istanbul. According to Turkish Dogan news agency, five convicted Kurdish terrorists were transferred to the F-type prison on Imralý late Monday. The 60-year-old Öcalan is serving a life sentence for leading the PKK. He was captured in 1999. PKK is considered as terrorist organization by the United States, European Union, Turkey and by many other countries. |
